Background:

Injuries to the diaphragm are generally rare due to its location within the thoracic cage. This report presents a case of a blunt diaphragmatic hernia in a 9-year-old girl. A 9-year-old presented to our hospital with 5 days history of blunt trauma to the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. On examination, she was unable to walk, her trachea was deviated to the right with bowel sounds heard in the left chest and generalized abdominal tenderness. She had blood transfusion and underwent splenectomy, reduction of herniated viscera, diaphragmatic repair and made good recovery. Trauma to the chest or abdomen is a rare cause of diaphragmatic hernia and prognosis is good with early intervention.
